Dean Forbes, CEO of Forterro, and no stranger to building companies, is one of the judging panel of the Growth Business of the Year category and he tells us what he will be looking for when he meets his ten category finalists.
What Dean Says:
I’m delighted and excited to be a judge at the Business Champion Awards 2023. Now I’ll be judging the business growth, and as somebody that’s led a number of businesses and tried to grow them, I know just how difficult that can be and how tough of a category that is going to be this year.
Now there’s a number of things I’ll be looking for in this category, and as we’ve seen, as we come through the pandemic, developing a strong, robust, and growing business is incredibly challenging, but incredibly important to do.
So, what will I be looking for? I’ll be looking for a team. A team that has demonstrated a track record of resilience and the creativity to be able to grow a business through difficult circumstances and trying times.
I’ll be looking at the credentials of that growth. So has it been sustained over a reasonable period and is there good reason to believe that that growth can continue into the future? And I’ll also be looking at the mechanisms for that growth.
Is it sustainable? Is it reliable? And is it authentic?
Sometimes we see businesses growing from one hit wonders that are difficult to repeat. So I’ll really be looking at the mechanics of that growth and the underlying performance of the business.
And whilst this category isn’t around profitability, I do think it’s important that we develop sustainable growth. We develop growth that can last long into the future.
So we will be looking at the quality of revenue that is driving that growth. So I’d like to wish all of the candidates the best of luck, and I look forward to seeing you at the Business Champion Awards for 2023.
